In 1978, Henk J. van den Berg was appointed Overseas General Agent for Fukada Salvage & Marine Works Company Ltd., Japan’s largest company for non-conventional marine services.
In 1980 the activities developed by Henk J. van den Berg as General Agent to Fukada and as an independent provider of towage and transport services were concentrated in various operating companies under the umbrella of holding company Fairmount Marine Investments B.V.
During the eighties, various operating companies of Fairmount Marine Investments operated deep sea tugs as well as semi-submersible barges, which activities, as a result of the award of a very large single contract involving most of these vessels, were sold to British interests in 1989.
Henk J. van den Berg continued as General Agent to Fukada under the Fairmount Marine brand name, until May 2007 a company owned by Fairmount Marine Investments, and during the nineties developed the company into a world class marine contractor for ocean towage, heavy lift transportation by (submersible) barge parallel to activities in the field of sales & purchase, brokerage and other related services.
Today Fairmount is the world leader in the field of long distance towing of the largest and most valuable objects afloat, such as FPSO’s. In order to meet the highest quality standards imposed by its world-wide clientele Fairmount Marine ordered no less than five new 205 tons bollard pull long distance towing vessels with anchor handling capacities from the Niigata Shipyard in Japan. Of this series, in May 2005 the 205 tons bollard pull FAIRMOUNT SHERPA was delivered and added to the fleet, in October 2005 sistervessel FAIRMOUNT SUMMIT and in May 2006 sistervessel FAIRMOUNT ALPINE, the largest and most powerful tugs ever built for Dutch interests, followed. In July 2006 FAIRMOUNT GLACIER was delivered to Fairmount Marine. The fifth supertug in the series, FAIRMOUNT EXPEDITION, has been delivered in May 2007.
Fairmount’s main activities are long distance ocean towage and salvage, with its fleet of five tugs of 200 tons bollard pull, the transportation of heavy lifts by semi-submersible barges and the worldwide activities of Fukada Salvage with its modern fleet of offshore support vessels and floating cranes.
